Potato prices rise 15.9 per cent since last year

According to Statistics Canada’s Consumer Price Index, the price of potatoes rose 4.1% between December 2022 and January 2023 and increased 15.9 per cent year-over-year.

That, in comparison to other fruits and vegetables over the course of the last year, is much less of an increase, with lettuce leading the pack increasing in cost by 35.3 per cent since 2022 and tomatoes going up 17.5 per cent.

Other food products that have seen a rise in cost since 2022 include flour and flour-based mixes (23.2 per cent), edible fats and oils (22.3 per cent), pasta products (19.5 per cent) and butter (19.1 per cent).
