Six potato storage bins damaged in Coaldale fire
April 4, 2014, Coaldale, Alta. – An explosion and fire has injured one person and damaged six potato storage bins at a potato storage facility in southwestern Alberta.
Police say a contractor was applying chemical treatment to prevent potatoes from sprouting when a fire ignited. The fire spread to six Quonset huts, two of which were holding 2,000 tonnes of potatoes which were lost. The fire also damaged several vehicles, including an RV, a tractor and a truck, causing between $2 and $3 million dollars worth of damage, according to a video from CTV News Calgary.
