Research: Gene advancements could reveal a path to reduce fertilizer dependence
January 20, 2025 By Potatoes in Canada
Research from Spain and the Netherlands could lead to greater nitrogen use efficiency in potatoes, lessening potatoes’ reliance on fertilizer.
Researchers from the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) of Barcelona, in collaboration with a team from University of Wageningen, have discovered new information on the StCDF1 gene. The team discovered that StDCF1 which is already known to regulate tuber development, also plays a pivotal role in nitrogen assimilation, which could result in the development of potato cultivars that are more nitrogen-efficient.
Advanced genetic research identified the gene’s binding to the promoter region of the nitrate reductase (StNR) gene, an enzyme in nitrate reduction.
