McCain reports strides on sustainability goals

June 8, 2022  By Potatoes in Canada

McCain Foods has released its Global Sustainability Summary, updating Canadians on its progress toward its sustainability commitments originally launched in 2020.

Over the last year, McCain has taken steps to grow more planet-friendly potatoes, including:

  • Creating its regenerative agriculture framework and developing regional plans for implementation;
  • Completing the first season at the Farm of the Future Canada, located in Florenceville, NB, setting benchmarks, identifying viable and practical sustainable ag techniques and testing new tech and machinery;
  • Establishing regenerative agriculture and healthy soils training programs for North American growers; and
  • Developing regional climate mitigation strategies, including 20 per cent of crops grown using stress-tolerant varieties.

It has also made numerous steps toward more resource-efficient operations, including reducing its absolute CO2 emissions in Scopes 1 and 2 by nine per cent since 2017, designing more of its packaging to be recycled, improving its water-use efficiency and more. It has also made key partnerships to offer more planet-friendly food choices to consumers, and has undertaken several community-oriented initiatives such as McCain Chips In, which encourages employees to volunteer in their community.
