Resources: Targeted tank mixtures for weed control in potatoes

April 7, 2025  By Potatoes in Canada

Researchers at University of Idaho (UI) know a thing or two about potatoes – and the weeds that compete with them.

For potato growers who prefer to work with conventional herbicides, developing an effective herbicide program is key to success – but can also vary wildly depending on a number of factors such as soil, tillage, water practices, crop rotation and more. Therefore, one also knows that not all tank mixes will have the same effects on the same field.

A guide on the university’s Extension Publications delves into how to determine the right tank mix for your field. This includes:

  • Developing a better understanding of how key herbicides work;
  • Understanding site of action (SOA);
  • Understanding active ingredients and how they work together (or don’t);
  • Factoring in timing;
  • Factoring in resistance.

With a litany of historic North American Data, UI’s publication offers several different herbicide tank mix partner choice charts, example case studies and best management practices for planning your herbicide program.
