USDA approves modified potato
Nov. 11, 2014, Boise, ID – A potato genetically engineered to reduce the amounts of a potentially harmful ingredient in French fries and potato chips has been approved for commercial planting.
November 11, 2014 By Brandi Cowen
The potato’s genetics, developed by J.R. Simplot, have been altered to reduce the amount of acrylamide produced when the potato is fried.
But, as the New York Times reports, the approval comes at a time when some consumers are questioning the safety of genetically engineered crops.
