Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has wrapped up, or is expecting to wrap up in 2020, several pesticide re-evaluation decisions for commonly used products in the Canadian potato industry such as Group M fungicides and neonicotinoids. We chat with Tracy Shinners-Carnelley, vice president of research and quality at Peak of the Market, on what this means for potato growers. Shinners-Carnelley shares a quick update, what to keep in mind for the future, and speaks about the responsibility of the industry as a whole.

- New fungicide use rules are in effect after May 10, 2020, which include reduction in applications (to three) and additional measures around timing and extra protective precautions.

- The use of mancozeb is currently status quo.
- Final decision expected June 2020.
- Metiram (Polyram)
- Products discontinued by the supplier.
- Growers can apply Cabrio Plus and/or Polyram DF until June 2021.
- Captan
- Not traditionally used on potatoes, but retains its use on potatoes after re-evaluation.
- Neonics
- The pollinator special review has been completed and the use on potatoes has been maintained, but fuller final decisions on the status of these insecticides are expected in the fall of 2020.
