There are currently eight spore traps set up in potato fields across Ontario to help detect spores of late blight. Filters from the spore traps are sent to A&L Laboratories in London, Ont. for analysis.

In addition to montioring results from spore traps, Banks says scouting is essential to detect early infection of late blight initiated by infected seed. Late blight can survive in multiple places around potato fields including on seed potatoes, volunteer potatoes, nightshade weeds and infected tubers in cull piles.

Spore trap filters are changed twice a week and lab results are available weekly.
