Potato beer brewer wins Premier’s Award

Nov. 27, 2014, Simcoe, ON – Ramblin' Road Brewery's beer-dipped kettle chips and potato beer have won a Premier's Award for Agri-Innovation Excellence.

The “brewery farm,” located in Ontario’s Norfolk County, slices potatoes for the kettle chips and then bathes them in beer stock to create a unique flavour profile.

One day owner John Picard eyed the potato wash water and wondered if the starch-rich liquid could be fermented into beer. After six months of research and trials, he concluded that it could.

“Norfolk and Haldimand farmers have long been on the leading edge in regards to innovation,” said Toby Barrett, member of provincial parliament for the riding of Haldimand-Norfolk. “There has been a long tradition of farmers from this riding winning and I am glad to see that continue.”
