Cavendish Farms is asking the P.E.I. government to double land ownership limits for potato farmers warning of threats to the 'long-term sustainability' of the industry due to decreasing yields.

Cavendish wants to increase limits to account for the trend of fewer but bigger farms. President Robert Irving said land limits developed during the 1980s are putting Island farmers at a disadvantage, saying Island farms need “to be able to operate at a scale that enables them to be competitive.” However, the Island environment minister said the Lands Protection Act limits the ability for a few corporations to own a large percentage of land on Prince Edward Island. | READ MORE
