CFIB report warns of labour shortages in Canadian ag market

A new report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses says nearly three quarters (74 per cent) of agri-business owners in Canada are working more hours to make up for lack of staff. Nearly half (48 per cent) have had to turn down sales or contracts due to labour shortages, while 41 per cent have had to decrease service offerings.
While the survey focused largely on labour shortages, other issues were addressed including rising input costs, which 94 per cent of respondents said were impacting their businesses. Supply chain challenges are also causing difficulties for 83 per cent of agri-businesses.
Factors throughout the last several years that have strained agri-businesses include fertilizer costs, climate challenges including both drought and excess moisture and supply chain challenges related to equipment.
Four out of five agri-businesses said they would not advise someone else to start a business because of labour shortages.
